Dustin's Puzzles
The Story
Dustin Welsh, born in 2002, has always been a happy person. He was diagnosed with Autism and intellectual disability at age 3. He has developed many loves, talents, and passions over the time he has spent in this world. Each day he inspires us with the way he enjoys life.
Dustin has developed an extreme talent in basketball. He loved the swings, and attempting to broaden his horizon, his parents told him that he had to go shoot basketball and make a basket before he could go on the swings. This number continued to increase over time, and now, Dustin spends countless hours out on the basketball court, shooting and making what seems to be at least 90% of the shots he takes. Not only is he talented at basketball, he absolutely loves it.
At 7 years old, Dustin received a set of simple, 6-piece puzzles for Christmas to help him with problem-solving. When he opened it, he wasn’t very happy. Uninterested in doing it, he struggled with them for many days. When he finally got the method down, his stepmom and dad continued to buy him slightly larger and harder puzzles over time. He started to enjoy doing puzzles. Then they thought, “Why not buy him a full-sized puzzle and see how he does?” At 12 years old, it would take him up to two weeks to complete a 250-piece puzzle. His talent and his love of doing puzzles has grown. He now finishes 1000-piece puzzles in less than 5 days. Dustin, at age 17, completed his largest ever puzzle, a 1500-piece, in 8 days.
One day, puzzles overloading our household, and nowhere to put them other than in a closet where no one could admire them, a new idea popped into his parents' heads. They had been wondering for a while what Dustin’s talent of fluently assembling puzzles would shape into for a future career, and they finally figured it out. His stepmom said, “Why can’t he turn doing puzzles into a job?” It was the best possible opportunity for him that they had thought of in a while. We talked it over between us and decided that it was a great idea. After this, his father and his brother started the website and established Dustin’s Puzzles.
Dustin’s Puzzles profits the future and the passion of Dustin Welsh. The money that he makes from Dustin’s Puzzles goes directly to his savings account, financing his business and his future. He continues to complete puzzles in outrageously short amounts of time, loving every second of it. Dustin loves his job.
We believe, as the parents of a child with a severe disability, that with the right amount of patience, love and support, our child can do and accomplish anything. We hope that Dustin's Puzzles inspires other parents of children with disabilities to believe it is possible for their child to attain their dreams.
